Comic Book Speculation on 2nd Print

Whether you like it or not, second or later prints are seeing some incredible price actions. I am not sure if this trend will continue or is just a speculation fad. Nevertheless, if you want to benefit from it, here are some 2nd print books that aren’t expensive and contain first appearances.

As long as you keep your spending small, there is no harm in playing some 2nd print lottery.

Edge of Spiderverse #5 2nd Print

Date of Publication: 2014
Sale number: No Information

Key strengths of this book
1. First appearance of Peni Parker

Edge of Spiderverse #5 has always been the ugly step sister to Edge of Spiderverse #2. While the later has become one of the most desired book in the modern market, the former has struggled to maintain any kind of interest.

As a result, the 2nd print is still relatively affordable at around $20-30.

Currently, I have noticed that the first print is starting to move. This might be the trigger needed for the 2nd print to start getting attention. Once they do, rest assured that they can be as profitable as Edge of Spiderverse #2 as both possess similar supply conditions.

In other words, it doesn’t take a lot for the 2nd print to start moving suddenly.

All New Ghost Rider #1 2nd Print

Date of Publication: 2014
Sale number: 2,567

Key strengths of this book
1. First appearance of Ghost Rider (Robbie Reyes)

This new Ghost Rider seems to be becoming a mainstay for Marvel Comics. Despite having his own series cancelled, Robbie Reyes is still part of the Avengers team and hence is enjoying solid exposure to comic fans.

Robbie was supposed to have his own show until it was cancelled. I believed that MCU might have bigger plans for him, thus it did not want any other shows to dilute what it has planned.

The first print for this book is around 50k. The 2nd print has only 2,567. This number is similar to the 1:50 variant, which is selling for hundreds of dollars.

If we go strictly by supply, both the variants and the 2nd print have the same numbers. However, one is clearly more expensive than the other. Does this mean that the 2nd print has room to grow?

In the past, my answer would be no since first print variant should be more valuable. However after seeing the likes of All New Marvel Point One 2nd print catching up to its variant, I am not so confident that it cannot be done.

Inhuman #1 2nd Print

Date of Publication: 2014
Sale number: No Information

Key strengths of this book
1. First appearance of Inferno

Out of all the new Inhumans being introduced during the 2014-15 period, Inferno is the one who broke out. In a few short years, he has made 66 comic appearances including being part of the Secret Warriors and Marvel Rising teams.

Inferno has also been featured in Marvel Rising animation shows.

Currently, all the Inhumans key issues are pretty dead. However, I think the Kamala Khan show will reignite interest in them. In fact, I believe some of these newer Inhumans might get introduced during the show. If so, Inferno will most likely be one of them.

This 2nd print is not easy to find. As of this writing, there is only one listing on Ebay, with zero copies on the other online stores that I frequent. It can be had for under $20 so the risk is not big if this doesn’t pan out.

Silk #1 2nd Print

Date of Publication: 2015
Sale number: 11,762

Key strengths of this book
1. Debut issue of self titled series

2. First appearance of Spectro

Silk has been receiving strong speculator attention, resulting in her first appearance in Amazing Spider-Man Vol 2, #4 spiking in prices. Even the 2nd print of that book is seeing $100 in sales.

If Silk continues to receive such attention, it is inevitable that debut issue of her self titled series will be hot. We have already seen such behavior in Spider-Gwen #1.

Below is a comparison table for benchmarking

SupplyPrice of NMPrice of 9.8
Spider-Gwen #1, 2nd Print24,501$20NA
Spider-Gwen #1, 3rd PrintNo Information$150NA
Silk #1, 2nd Print11,762$10NA

This table has put out a wide price range for us to consider. Specifically, Silk #1 2nd print can potentially perform between $20 and $150.

Personally, I think it will settle between $50 to $100 because:

  • Supply of Silk #1 2nd print is half of Spider-Gwen #1 2nd print but should be more than the third print
  • There is no 3rd print to dilute the rarity factor for Silk #1’s 2nd print
  • Silk is less popular than Spider-Gwen

Nevertheless, the low entry price for this book with high potential returns makes it a solid lottery book candidate.

Spider-Gwen Vol 2, #24 2nd Print

Date of Publication: 2017
Sale number: No Information

Key strengths of this book
1. First appearance of Gwenom

The first appearance of Gwenom in Spider-Gwen #24 has seeing some heat recently. The first print has appreciated in price to around $40-50. The 2nd print sits around $25.

If the 2nd print craze grabs this book, its 2nd print can easily become more popular than its 1st as both prints are close in price. As I have mentioned in my 2nd print investment framework, as long as the first print does not have a high price point, there is a chance of a 2nd print overtaking it.

The only downside is the lack of supply information. Currently it seems you can find this book quite easily so it seems to be like less rare than other 2nd prints. However, that could also be speculators haven’t fully latch on to this book yet.

On average, I find that 2nd print account for 10% of all Spider-Gwen Vol 2, #24 listings on ebay.

Darth Vader #3 4th Print

Date of Publication: 2016
Sale number: No Information

Key strengths of this book
1. First appearance of Doctor Aphra, H-H-H and BT-1

This is not part of the cheap 2nd print speculation but I am bringing this up to ask a question:

Can the 4th or even 3rd print of Darth Vader #3 repeat the performance of All New Marvel Point One 2nd print?

I am considering this possibility because this book checks a lot of my 2nd print framework

  1. Oversupply of first print help: This is certainly the case as Darth Vader #3 has over 80k sales numbers. This is in contrast to 4th prints which are getting harder to find. In fact, the 3rd print seems even harder
  2. The first print did not have a higher price point: Prices for the first and 4th print are pretty close so the condition is there for 4th to overtake 1st print.

I hope this question helps you to ponder over the possibility of Darth Vader #3 4th print becoming the next ANMPO 2nd print.

Conclusion

Later printings becoming more valuable than first print is not a new thing as I have detailed here. The new thing happening is the speed which the later printings are raising. I find this speed to be too fast and might be indicative of a bubble forming.

As long as you keep your investments small, the risk to leveraging on this trend is not too big. However, do not invest hundreds of dollars into 2nd prints thinking they might go higher.

  1. Great picks Aaron – I’ve just one question… how you find out a characters number of appearances ? Thanks in advance 🙂

  2. I completely agree, there are many other 2nd print 1st appearance to be on the look out for. The Champions 22 2nd print and Star Wars Kanan: The Last Padawan #1 2nd print. I was not aware of the Inhumans #1 2nd print. There are so many variants for that book. A 1:50 cost like $15-25.00 at auction. The prices are slowly rising.

        1. Hi Derek

You can check out these numbers:

          Champions vol 2, #19 – April 11, 2018
          April (2018) – 17,922
          June (2018) – 1,516
          July (2018) – 1,078

  3. OK, got it. Volumes showing up in different months would represent later printings.

However, if there’s a 2nd variant, like for example, Miss America #1 Hip Hop variant which had 2 print runs, I’m guessing there would be no detailed information to determine that.

Comic Speculation #23: Dead Girl Key Comics

Welcome to another week of Comic Sunday Speculation where I posted my ‘out there’ speculation ideas. Most of these ideas are long shots, which means low probability of success. However, they are cheap and one hit can pay back for the rest. In this week, I draw inspiration from the newsstand data that I have […]
