June 2nd week saw more newsstand sales compared to the past week. In total, 138 copies of newsstand comic books (published after 1998) were sold.
- 72% of these newsstand comics were sold below $10. That is lower than last week which saw 83% of sales occurring in this price range. In this category, many DC 52’s newsstands are selling well, regardless of having any significance or not. Non key Spider-Man books also sold well.
- 20% of newsstand comics sold between $11 to $30. In this category, we start to see newsstand comics with first appearances starting to command some premium over their regular editions.
- 4% of sales occur between $31 and $100. Specifically, 6 books sold in this price range.
- Finally, 2.8% or 4 books sold over $100 for June 2020 2nd week.
Beyond these numbers, there are some interesting buying patterns I am seeing after tracking over 1000 of these sales.
- Condition is not as important. I see sales of similar amounts for identical books with varying conditions. For newsstand comic books, it seem availability is more important than condition, i.e. any condition is better than having no books.
- Newsstand sellers usually make multiple sales in a week. When these sellers have copies of newsstand comics, they can sell these fairly quickly if the pricing is correct.
- Newsstand buyers buy more than 1 newsstand per seller. I see newsstand collectors buying many newsstand comics from one seller if they manage to have that inventory. It seems like collecting runs of newsstand comics is very much alive, rather than just focusing on the keys.
On to this week noticeable sales.
Star Wars: Heir to the Empire #1
Copies sold: 2
Average Sales: $70
Appearing 3rd week in a row, Star Wars: Heir to the Empire #1 remains hot. It also indicates that newsstand availability is more common for this book, relative to other moderns.
Both books that sold were in very fine and fine conditions. Despite these, both copies were able to maintain a price premium of 50% over their regular editions of around $40.
Venom FlashPoint #1
Copies sold: 1
Average Sales: $150
Venom Flashpoint has a newsstand sale this week that is pretty high in price. This book is a reprint book but somehow captures the attention of the market with its awesome cover.
Regular editions of this book sell for around $50-60 range. This sale confirms a newsstand premium of 200%! This same book sold in May as well for a similar price so it looks like the premium is real.
Amazing Spider-Man #546
Copies sold: 1
Average Sales: $55
Spiderman #546 continues to sell well in newsstand. In May, it sold 3 copies with a significant newsstand premium.
The trend is continuing as this sales is still way above the price of a regular edition. The latter sells now for $10-15. A $55 sale means almost a 5X newsstand premium.
Batman #656
Copies sold: 1
Average Sales: $40
Batman #655 newsstand has always sell well. Looks like #656 is catching on as well. Damien makes a full appearance in this issue, compared to the shadowy figure in #655.
Regular editions of this book sell for $20-30 range. This $40 sale, while not huge, still represents a 30-50% premium.
Star Wars Tales #24
Copies sold: 1
Average Sales: $40
Making its first entry into the charts, Star Wars Tales #24 features the first appearance of Darth Nihilus, a pretty popular Sith lord.
Unfortunately, the sale of $40 in a very fine- condition did not show any newsstand premium over its regular edition, meaning it is still fairly priced.
Its low print of 18,000 makes it a very good book to speculate on.
Justice League Vol 2, #40
Copies sold: 1
Average Sales: $100
It is the first time I saw a newsstand edition of Justice League #40 sold and what an entrance. This book contains the first appearance of Grail, daughter of Darkseid.
On average, this book sells for $10-15. A sale of $100 is almost 10X its regular price. This book takes the prize for having the highest newsstand premium this week.
Young Avengers #10
Copies sold: 1
Average Sales: $50
With the Kate Bishop Disney+ show in the works, her books are seeing heat. However, I am not sure about this book’s importance with regards to Kate. At least this is still the first appearance of Speed
Its newsstand sold for $50, a 2.5X over the regular versions. Such sales have been happening for the past 3 months.
