July 2020 (4th week) Comic Book Sales Charts and Figures
The 4th week of July saw a total of 114 newsstand copies being sold. This is more in line with what the rest of July has been seeing, instead of the 74 copies last week.
- 45% of newsstand comics sold are sold at $10 and below prices. There was a big sale of Scooby-Doo issues as one buyer practically just bought every issue being listed. There was also healthy sales for Ms Marvel Vol 2 and Daredevil Vol 2.
- 37% of newsstand sales are sold between $11 and $30. This week saw a lot of sales dealing with lead female characters such as Ms Marvel Vol 2, She-Hulk Vol 2, Wonder Woman Vol 2 etc. Most of these sales are probably due to the covers. Wonder Woman of course features artwork from Adam Hughes.
- 14% of newsstand sales are sold between $30 and $100. This brings the distribution of sales back to a more normal state compared to last week, which saw more above $100 sales.
- 4% of newsstand sales are sold above $100. This week saw only 4 sales that broke the $100 mark.
Below are the top 10 newsstand sales for the week.
Ultimate Fallout#4
Copies sold: 1
Average Sales: $1,845
A 9.0 CGC graded newsstand copy of Ultimate Fallout #4 sold for a whopping $1.8k.
In contrast, a regular edition of a 9.0 only sells for $300. This means the newsstand premium being paid is around 6X!
This is what happens to hot books that have newsstands and why it pays to invest in them.
Avenging Spider-Man #9
Copies sold: 1
Average Sales: $199
This book was one of the hottest book around when the Captain Marvel trailer was released.
Unfortunately, it dropped by more than 50% after the movie was released.
However, this sale for its newsstand edition manages to maintain its previous high value and commands a 120% premium over the regular edition.
New Avengers #7
Copies sold: 3
Average Sales: $55 – $99
Making its first entry into the charts is New Avengers #7, the first appearance of the lluminati.
With rumors of a lluminati movie in development, this issue has been flying off the shelves, for both direct and newsstand editions.
Currently, the former is selling for $25-30 while the latter is selling between $55 – $100. The newsstand premium is this case is around 2-4X.
Star Wars Tales #23
Copies sold: 1
Average Sales: $75
A VG+ copy of this book sold for $75 this week. This issue contains the first full/cameo appearance of Darth Revan, a popular Star Wars character.
On average, the regular edition for a VG copy sells for $20-25. This $75 sale represents a premium of 3X.
Batman #656
Copies sold: 1
Average Sales: $65
Considered to be the first full appearance of Daiman Wayne, this is Batman #656’s second entry into the charts as well.
This $65 sales is for a VF- copy. In contrast, the regular editions for this book in VF- condition usually just sells for under $20. The newsstand premium then is around 3X.
We have already seen Batman #655 making multiple entries into the charts. I expect #656 to follow suit in the coming weeks and months.
What if Venom Possessed Deadpool?
Copies sold: 1
Average Sales: $700
2 weeks ago, a newsstand edition of this book sold for $675. This week saw a similar sale of $700 for a VFNM condition book.
For regular edition, this book will usually cost $350.
This means the newsstand premium of 100% is pretty real and is a good return.
Amazing Spider-Man #606
Copies sold: 1
Average Sales: $160
This marks the second time this book has entered the chart in July, after debuting in May.
While this sale is lower than the one 2 weeks ago, the reason is due to this copy being a lower condition book.
However, the newsstand premium is still a healthy 4-5x as a direct edition of a similar condition book will cost only $40.
Gambit Vol 5 #1
Copies sold: 1
Average Sales: $75
Another first entry into the charts is Gambit’s 2012 series. While there are some minor first appearances in this issue, it has never been a hot book.
In fact, the regular edition of this book is still at cover price or even lower.
This sale of $75 is for a fine copy, making its newsstand premium an astounding 15x! Lets see if this is a one off or has a recurring premium in future sales.
Batman Vol 2, #1
Copies sold: 1
Average Sales: $70
The New 52 Batman #1 makes its first entry into the charts with a $70 sale for a NM copy.
This was a $100 book when the New 52 was still a thing. Now, the regular edition sells for just $30.
This sales puts the premium at 2x.
Hawkeye Vol 4, #11
Copies sold: 1
Average Sales: $60
Following the footsteps of Hawkeye Vol 4, #9, issue #11 has now entered the sales charts for the first time. I expect more issues within this series to start appearing as we roll nearer to the Hawkeye Disney+ show.
Having said that, I am a bit puzzled on this sale. Although it features a cool cover, there is no first appearances contained within this issue.
Compared to regular editions, this sale is 6X more pricey.
Besides the top 10, here are 2 honorable mentions.
Superman Batman #22
Copies sold: 2
Average Sales: $30 – $40
This book continues to sell well based on the Batman Beyond appearance that supersedes Superman Batman Annual #4.
While the prices sold might not seem impressive, bear in mind these are fine copies. Regular editions for these books in such conditions cannot even command a $10 price tag.
Jedi Mace Windu One Shot
Copies sold: 1
Average Sales: $50
One of the harder to find Dark Horse Star Wars books, this issue contains the first appearance of Asajj Ventress.
This sales of $50 is for A VG newsstand copy. For comparison, a fine copy recently sold for $60.
So, there seems to be some newsstand premium although it is not as obvious as other books.
It is good to see that the newsstand premium for key books are getting healthier by the week. Even for new books that break out such as New Avengers #7, the premium is immediately being realised.
If you are still not getting into the newsstand game, it is still not too late as there are still cheap newsstand books out there with solid first appearances.
Hawkeye 11 tells the story from Pizza dog’s point of view in a very entertaining way
I just sold my New Avengers 7 Newsstand yesterday on eBay. Got $125 for a VF/NM copy and it sold within an hour or two of listing. I paid less than a buck for it.
