Undervalued Comics #51 – Bronze Age Books That Have Cooled Off

In this article, I covered bronze age comics that got hot once and are now very cold. This might not be a bad thing as they represent buying opportunities for those who believed in the long term potential of these characters.

For these comics, I am focusing on VF and below as the high grades are still pricey. However, in VF, some of these comics are be had for below $50 and even $30 for some. At these price range, it is pretty hard to lose money but has plenty of upside.

Giant Size Fantastic Four #4Madrox, the Multiple Man295$40

Giant-Size Fantastic Four #4

Date of Publication: 1975
Sale number: No Information

Key strengths of this book
1. First appearance of Madrox, the Multiple Man

Madrox has the highest comic appearances ratio among the characters listed here. This is not surprising given that he had his own solo and headed the X-Factor Investigation series. Overall, he is quite a well used character but needed more media or comic push.

In the media scene, Madrox was suppose to have his own solo movie in 2017, starring James Franco. That was what sparked a spike in Giant Size Fantastic Four #4. I remembered selling my raw FVF copy for $90 in Dec 2017, which I have bought in Oct 2014 for $45.

Currently, the price has retraced back to the $30-$40 level, which is even lower than what I bought it for.

Below is a comparison of what a giant size comic can fetch in VF if it has more heat.

Giant-Size Defenders #3 was heating up due to rumors about Korvac being in Guardians of the Galaxy #3. While prices have cooled, they are still higher than Giant-Size Fantastic Four #4. Considering that the former is just a villain appearance with only 44 appearances, the later seem undervalued.

Due to the fact that this is a giant size book with black borders, high grade copies are hard to come by. Although I am primary concerned with VF condition books, I will not mind buying a high grade copy if the price is right.

There is a Marvel Value Stamp within this book so make sure it is inside that when you are buying it. Any cut out MVP will reduce the value of this book but quite a bit.

Defenders #28

Date of Publication: 1975
Sale number: No Information

Key strengths of this book
1. First full appearance of Starhawk

Before Guardians of the Galaxy #2 in 2015, this book was pretty heated and was going for $50-60 for a VF copy. I sold 3 copies then after purchasing quite a few in 2014 for $20+.

After we saw Sylvester Stallone’s Starhawk in the movie, interests in this book pretty much tank. Stallone look nothing like the Starhawk we knew and given his age, it seems that the character might not have a bright future in the MCU.

This is why Defenders #28 is now a below $30 book in VF. At this price, I feel it is worth speculating as you never know how the MCU might treat this character going forward. It is a long shot but worth it if you like Starhawk and like to pick this book up for much cheaper than what it was going for.

Marvel Premiere #19

Date of Publication: 1974
Sale number: No Information

Key strengths of this book
1. First appearance of Colleen Wing

Marvel Premiere #19 received some heat when Colleen Wing appeared in the Marvel Netflix Iron Fist series. However, the series wasn’t as well received as Daredevil or Punisher, resulting in this book cooling off pretty fast.

However, with the rise of Kung Fu in the MCU due to Shang-Chi, I believe Colleen Wing will eventually be used again. When that happens, I expect this book to heat up again.

Currently, this book can be had for below $40 if you wait for auctions. The BINs for this book is ridiculously overpriced so avoid those.

Eternals #3

Date of Publication: 1976
Sale number: No Information

Key strengths of this book
1. First appearance of Sersi

It seems like everyone is treating this book as if the movie is over when the real hype has not even started yet. At its peak, Eternals #3 in VF was going for $50-$60. Now, it is barely holding on to $25. I see this as a great buying opportunity.

I know many speculators have already bought and sold this book for healthy profits. However, that does not mean you cannot make money with the same book again.

With an Eternals movie coming in End 2021, as well as new comic series in Jan 2021 by writer Kieron Gillen and artist Esad Ribic, they will be in the news for the foreseeable future. Below is a trailer for the comic:

Sersi, being the most standout character among the Eternals, has a real chance of breaking out and become the next Gamora. Below is the table I created in this article on the top female characters to invest for 2019. I believed it is still valid for Sersi.

Strange Tales #180Gamora396$70

Conclusion

It is always easy to get caught up in the latest shiny books. However, you can still make money if you look for books that have cooled off but have a chance to make a comeback.

Darth Vader is arguably one of the most popular Star Wars characters. However, the speculative markets seldom discusses his key issues, probably because Darth Vader is already so well established.
