July 2020 (2nd week) Comic Book Sales Charts and Figures
This week saw the total copies of newsstand sold going back to 3 digits again, at 122 copies.
- 48% of newsstand comics sold are sold at $10 and below prices. In this category, lots of Amazing Spider-Man copies were sold. Surprising, this week also saw lots of Star Wars Republic series being sold from one seller who listed many of his newsstand collection. Compared to last week, more newsstand copies sold in this price category.
- 28% of newsstand sales are sold between $11 and $30. This week saw a big drop of sales from this price category as most went to the previous bucket.
- 16% of newsstand sales are sold between $30 and $100. Daredevil stole the show here as the newsstand editions of Daredevil #9 and even $10 are selling well.
- 6% of newsstand sales are sold above $100. This week again saw quite a number of high ticket item sales that I will be reviewing in the top 10 charts below.
Below are the top 10 newsstand sales for the week.
Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #1
Copies sold: 4
Average Sales: $85 to $200
This book saw the most sales this week, with 4 copies being sold at a relative high price range.
2 copies sold below $100 as they were 7-8.0 conditions. The ones that are high grade sold above $200.
There was this set (pictured) that sold for $1500. I have no way to break down that sale but it is worth bringing to your attention.
Batman #635
Copies sold: 1
Average Sales: $240
A CGC 9.4 copy of this book in newsstand edition sold for $240. Usually, the direct editions for only $120.
So, even for graded copies, we are seeing a high newsstand premium being commanded.
Red Hood is just one of those characters waiting to blow up. I would try to find one in newsstand asap.
Amazing Spider-Man #606
Copies sold: 1
Average Sales: $210
Returning back to the charts is ASM #606, a very much desired cover by all Scott Campbell fans.
Usually, you can get this book for $50 in neat mint condition.
However, this 8.0 newsstand raw copy sold for 4X as much!
Amazing Spider-Man #601
Copies sold: 1
Average Sales: $85
Another Scott Campbell cover in the charts. Why am I not surprised?
This copy sold for less than #606 because it was a very fine copy, compared to the near mint condition of the #606.
Nevertheless, it is still a very healthy 2X premium over the direct editions for this book.
Star Wars Tales #24
Copies sold: 1
Average Sales: $70
Continuing its streak from last month, Star Wars Tales #24 made another sales this week.
However, the newsstand premium isn’t that obvious when compared to its direct edition sales.
One reason is that Darkhorse newsstand seems to be more common for this series as you can always find one for sale.
What if Venom possessed Deadpool #1
Copies sold: 1
Average Sales: $625
This book has always been a popular book. In fact, it appeared in my article on the top 10 modern covers to invest in.
In raw condition, this book usually fetches between $300-400 for neat mint condition.
This newsstand copy sold for $625, indicating a newsstand premium of 100% or more.
Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E #0
Copies sold: 1
Average Sales: $226
A 9.6 CGC newsstand of this book sold for $226.
The previous 9.6 sales for a regular is $150, so the newsstand premium for this book is not as high as for Batman $635.
Nevertheless, this book has already made multiple entries into the charts.
Superman Vol 4, #10
Copies sold: 1
Average Sales: $100
Making its first entry into the charts if the first appearance of the Super Sons.
This is a book that you can get for $10 in direct edition. However for a newsstand, prepare to pay 10X as much.
It had a couple of sales in June but somehow wasn’t picked up in my search until now.
Daredevil Vol 2 #9
Copies sold: 3
Average Sales: $50 for very fine and $80 for near mint
This book is currently on a hot streak. This entry makes it 3rd appearance in the charts, after missing it last week.
In fact, a #10 issue sold this week as well for $50.
Compared to the direct editions which usually sells for $30, the newsstand are getting 2.5X the price.
Catwoman Vol 3, #45
Copies sold: 1
Average Sales: $50
It is good to see another artist breaking into the charts besides Scott Campbell.
This is one of the many Adam Hughes covers for Catwoman. Direct editions routinely sold for $25. This newsstand edition is command a premium of 2X with this $50 sale.
I am looking for Hughes newsstand as well but very little luck so far.
For this week, we have some honorable mentions as well.
Superman #775
Copies sold: 1
Average Sales: $45
This book has the first appearance of The El. It started gaining attention after rumors of Superman becoming part of the Elite team.
The newsstand starting selling since the rumors started but this week had a very high sale of $45.
Super Sons #1
Copies sold: 4
Average Sales: $20
4 copies of the Super Sons #1 were sold this week.
This book, together with Superman Vol 4, #10 is pointing to the Super Sons getting some attention this week.
This might due to the story line happening in Decrease right now.
Incomplete tracking
Before I go, I like to highlight a comment made by Todd regarding the data for these newsstand issues:
I also think your missing a lot of data because you’re not looking at any results on newsstands that don’t have newsstand in the title. Most post 98 newsstands that sell aren’t labeled as newsstands.
I don’t disagree with what Todd said. There is just no human way to be able to track sales of newsstand comics if they are not being listed as such.
However, this does not mean the sales data presented here is not useful. In fact, we should be more optimistic than what the sales charts presented since there is a larger universe of un-captured data.
In other words, you can treat these as the conservative view of the newsstand market. The actual market should be much bigger and therefore more lucrative for the newsstand investor.
Thanks for responding. I love that you’re keeping track of Newsstand Sales & doing a write up each week.
Hey Todd, if you have data to add to mine, I would love to share them as well to make the info as complete as humanly possible. You can email me at aaron.weenian@gmail.com
