Most Valuable 2nd Print Comic

This is the first top 10 rankings of the most valuable comics that are 2nd prints, published after 2000. The ranking was inspired by CGC’s top 10 most valuable modern variants. Since 2nd print has become a somewhat popular, the information might be of value to some collectors.

The ranking is sorted from the least to the most valuable. The prices are current as of this writing. Only 9.8 Blue labels will be included to prevent any signatures from inflating the value of the books

Why 2nd printing has value?

Most of the 2nd printing book derived its value from its lower supply.

In addition, some might feature a better first appearance cover. In these cases, they usually showcase the new character in a much better light which increases its collectibility.

That being said, the market is trending towards the “any 2nd print is good” kind of momentum. I am not sure if it is a fad or it will become a new collecting niche.

Honorable Mention: Spider-Man 2099 #1, 2nd Printing

Date of Publication: 2001
Sale number: No Information
Value: $250 in 9.6

Key strengths of this book
Might be tough in 9.4 and above

This is the only book that I used a 9.6 as a 9.8 sales has no data on Ebay. Even with a 9.6, it is already commanding a nice premium over the 1st printing prices.

This second printing came from a toy package so conditions are not the best. If a 9.8 sale happen, I expect to move this book to higher up the charts.

With Sony having plans for this character (as can seen from the Edge of Spiderverse ending credit), Spider-Man 2099 will probably break out in the next few years.

10: Mighty Avengers #13, 2nd Print

Date of Publication: 2008
Sale number: 5,374
Value: $275

Key strengths of this book
1. First cover art of the Secret Warriors

This was a book that nobody cared for until rumors recently surfaced about a Disney+ show for the Secret Warriors. Early speculators have began buying this book since then.

Might Avengers #13’s first print had a staggering supply of over 100k+. No wonder collectors began to seek out the lower supply 2nd printing with a better first appearance cover.

This book can go in either direction. If there are no further news, it could fizzle out pretty fast. However, if the rumors are true, I expect this book to increase its value.

9: Venom Vol 4, #3, 2nd Printing

Date of Publication: 2018
Sale number: 11,080
Value: $300

Key strengths of this book
1. First cover appearance of Knull

Knull is probably one of the hottest villain currently. His popularity has sent this book straight up in both raw and 9.8 prices.

This 3rd printing features a more powerful cover of Knull, which fans seems to take up on. This book has no media hype and shows you don’t always need movies to be hot.

8: Spawn #166, 2nd Printing

Date of Publication: 2007
Sale number: 3,000
Value: $310

Key strengths of this book
Different cover art

Spawn fans has always been somewhat obsessive about certain Spawn books. Looks like Spawn #166 2nd print is another ‘must have’ book that collectors need to have in their collection.

The attractive thing about this 2nd print is the different cover art.

7: Venom First Host #3, 2nd Printing

Date of Publication: 2018
Sale number: Less than 5,000
Value: $325

Key strengths of this book
1. First cover art of the Sleeper Symbiote

The Symbiote has been popular even since Donny Cates took over the Venom series. The Sleeper Symbiote was born with this run and has been gaining popularity since its inception.

If Donny Cates continue to develop this character, expect this 2nd print to remain in demand.

6: Daredevil #610, 2nd Printing

Date of Publication: 2019
Sale number: Less than 5,000
Value: $400

Key strengths of this book
1. First cover art of The Vigil

The Vigil is a recent addition to the Daredevil rogue gallery but what an entry he has made! The key question is whether this book can sustain its price, given that it is the first appearance of a villain.

5: Monstress #1, 2nd Printing

Date of Publication: 2015
Sale number: No Information
Value: $450

Key strengths of this book
Different cover art

Monstress #1 has always been a much beloved series. This 2nd printing features a brand new cover art. Going by its prices, fans love it and are willing to pay a price higher than its first print!

Another interesting to note that Monstress has no strong media hype. It is rumorerd to be optioned for HBO but there has been no concrete dates yet. Imagine what would happen if the rumors turn out to be true.

Nevertheless, Monstress is a solid comic series that anyone should read. It has fantastic characters, unique settings and and powerful strong lines.

4: Edge of Spider-verse #2, 2nd Printing

Date of Publication: 2014
Sale number: Less than 5,000
Value: $480

Key strengths of this book
NA

Edge of Spider-verse #2 is a hot book at the moment as it benefits from the Ultimate Fallout’s meteoric rise. As a result, its 2nd print is now being pulled up in prices following the first print’s rise.

This book unfortunately did not offer any significance aside from having a smaller print and a cheaper price relative to the first print.

It will not surprise me if a latter printing with a smaller supply overtake this book.

3: Amazing Spider-Man #569, 2nd Printing

Date of Publication: 2008
Sale number: 8,481
Value: $500

Key strengths of this book
1. First cover art of Anti Venom

This book’s demand rise and falls by the use of the Anti Venom identity in the comics. Right now, it is in more of a cooling period so prices have soften relative to its peak.

However, it is still a demand book, especially when it drops below $500. This book has blown up potential written all over it if the Anti Venom is featured in the next Venom movie.

2: Ultimate Fallout #4, 2nd Print

Date of Publication: 2011
Sale number: 14,372
Value: $700

Key strengths of this book
1. NA

It is not too far fetch to say Ultimate Fallout #4 is the hottest book in the modern market right now. It is so hot that its second print is now more pricey than even the first printing for many other books.

In terms of the book, there is really not much significance.

  • The cover art is not that different from the first printing
  • The supply is also not that small as it is around 14k

Nevertheless, Mile Morales is hot and it is affecting all his books.

1: Captain Marvel #17, 2nd Print

Date of Publication: 2014
Sale number: Less than 5,000
Value: $1,300

Key strengths of this book
1. First preview of Kamala Khan as Ms Marvel

This book has been pretty well known to the collecting community. I speculate on it so long ago that I am still surprised by its current value.

Recently, the book has sort of lost its shine as the market is hot on Ultimate Fallout #4 and Edge of Spider-verse #2. I wonder if this is the simmering period before it launches into new heights in 2021 when Marvel launches Kamala’s own Disney+ show.

Observations

Based on these top 10 rankings, below are some observations:

  • 8 out of 10 book have a different cover art. Does this mean 2nd printings with different cover are easier to break out?
  • 5 out of 10 books feature the first cover art of a new character.
  • 8 out of 10 books have over taken the first printing in terms of prices.
  • 5 out of 10 books involves a Spider-Man related character
  • 6 out of 10 books are around 5-6 years old.

Conclusion

2nd or later printings have valuing is not new. We have seen that in Hulk #377, Batman #608 etc. However, there have been more 2nd print books gaining in value.

Whether this trend will continue is something interesting to observe. Hopefully. this top 10 ranking will help you to see the trends better.
