October 2020 (5th week) Comic Book Sales Charts and Figures
The low volume sales continued from last week to this week with a total of 84 modern newsstand copies being sold. That being said, I did notice that pre 1998 newsstands were selling pretty well, although it falls outside the scope of this sales chart tracking.
- 37% of newsstand comics sold are sold at $10 and below prices. Batman and related titles account for almost 50% of sales in this price category. X-Men and related titles account for another 20% while the rest comprised of Amazing Spider-Man and other low volume sales.
- 39% of newsstand sales are sold between $11 and $30. In this price category, Spider-Man and related titles take up 30% of volume sales. The other well selling issues belong to She Hulk Vol 2, as well as X-men related titles.
- 11% of newsstand sales are sold between $30 and $100. Similar to last week, there are less sales in this price category relative to the above $100 price category, which is interesting. In total, about 9 issues sold here including Miles Morales, Star Wars and Amazing Spider-Man.
- 13% of newsstand sales are sold above $100. There are 11 books that sold above $100, with one book breaking the 4 digit value.
Below are the top 10 newsstand sales for the week.
Amazing Fantasy Vol 2, #15
Copies sold: 1
Average Sales: $2,500
This is only Amazing Fantasy Vol 2, #15’s second entry into the charts, after debuting in the 2nd week of August. This shows how rarely the newsstand edition of this book is listed for sale.
This sale is for a CGC 9.6 and it went for a mind blowing $2,600. This shatters the previous $1,200 sale for a raw newsstand copy.
In comparison to the direct editions which sells for $450 in CGC 9.6, this sale has a newsstand premium of 500%!
Batgirl Vol 3, #12
Copies sold: 1
Average Sales: $395
The first new entry this week comes from Batgirl Vol 3, #12. This book features a gorgeous cover art by Artgerm. It is arguably one of Batgirl’s best modern cover.
This sales is for a CGC 9.8 copy and it sold for $395. In contrast, direct edition 9.8s are selling for $200. This means the newsstand premium paid in this case is around 100%.
Hulk Vol 2 #1
Copies sold: 1
Average Sales: $203
The first appearance of the Red Hulk appeared for the 5th time on the charts. The 4th entry was made 2 months ago on the 3rd week of August.
This time, the sale is for a CGC 8.0 copy and sold for $203. The price is identical to the previous sale, which was also for a CGC 8.0 and went for $216.
Compared to the regular CGC 8.0, the newsstand premium is around 200%. This premium is similar to previous sales.
Amazing Spider-Man #606
Copies sold: 1
Average Sales: $192
This sale is part of the 3 book sale that I mentioned earlier. This marks #606’s 5th entry into the charts. The previous appearance was on the 4th week of September.
In VF condition, direct editions of this book will sell for $30-$40. This means the newsstand premium is in the super high region of 400%.
Morbius Vol 2 #1
Copies sold: 1
Average Sales: $168
The final new entry this week comes from Morbius Vol 2, #1. With his movie coming out next year, it is no wonder that Morbius books are getting noticed.
For this sale, a CGC 9.6 was sold for $168. That is double of what this book will normally go for if it is a direct edition 9.6.
Justice League Vol 2, #50
Copies sold: 1
Average Sales: $630
DC newsstands are selling as well as Marvel newsstand. You can see this in this week’s number 2 book.
Justice League Vol 2, #50 made it third entry this week, with its previous entry on the 3rd week of October. The 2 previous sales were all CGC 9.8 books and they sold for $240 and $375. The sale this time is $630 for a CGC 9.8, which is an 80% increase over $375.
Newsstand premium for this book is still around 150% as direct editions 9.8s are now selling for $250.
Supergirl Adventures #21
Copies sold: 1
Average Sales: $299
The second new entry this week also comes from DC comics. This is what I mean about DC newsstands performing much better than their regular editions.
This sale is for a CGC 9.8, which went for $299. In contrast, the regular 9.8 is commanding about $180 in price. Hence, there is around a 50% newsstand premium.
Amazing Spider-Man #607
Copies sold: 1
Average Sales: $192
Making a 5th entry after missing for 2 months since the last sale on the 4th week of August, this sale was part of a 3 book newsstand set. I took the price and divided by 3 to get each book’s individual price.
The condition for this set of comics was around VF. If we looked at the direct VF editions, they will go for $40-$50. This gives us a newsstand premium of around 300%!
Amazing Spider-Man #601
Copies sold: 1
Average Sales: $192
The final book in the 3 book set sale is Amazing Spider-Man #601. This is the book’s 6th entry into the charts, with its previous appearance on 4th week of September as well.
The pricing for #601 is very similar to #606. In direct editions, this book is going for $40 in VF condition, which means the newsstand premium is also around 400%.
Amazing Spider-Man Vol 2, #36
Copies sold: 1
Average Sales: $158
Making its second entry into the charts is Amazing Spider-Man Vol 2, #36. This book debuted in the 2nd week of September but has been making regular sales.
This sale is for a CGC 9.6 which went for $158. Regular editions are going for $110 so the premium is around 40%.
I was able to find a NM newsstand copy of Superman Adventures #21 searching bins at Half Price Books for $2. My best ever find searching there stores.
Yup, you tend to be able to find newsstand in book stores relative to traditional LCS. Well done!
